What Are Azo Dyes? Why Are They In My Cloths?

Azo dyes are one of the main dyes used in the textile industry.  Azo dyes are derived from benzidine, a well known carcinogen.  Azo dyes naturally break down releasing chemicals known as aromatic amines which cause cancer in humans, specifically cancer of the bladder. The EU has banned the use of these Azo dyes in the fashion industry, but you can still find Azo dyes in todays market place.
