What Are Chlorinated Solvents?

March 30, 2018

Chlorinated solvents - such as trichloroethane (TCE) - are used to clean fabrics.

TCE is an ozone-depleting substance that can persist in the environment. It is known to affect the central nervous system, liver and kidneys. Since 2008 the EU has severely restricted the use of TCE in both products and fabric cleaning.  Chlorinated solvents are very toxic and can be avoided by switching to certified organic clothing.

Be mindful, trichloroethane are found in other common house hold items such as:

  • degreasing activities / industrial sites

  • building materials

  • paints

  • glues

  • household cleaning products

  • in aerosol sprays
